WHAT IS VICTORIAN TILING?

Since the 1860s, the quintessentially British, geometric tiled floors have been adding prestige and colour to homes, business and estates.

Their rise to fame was largely accountable to their use in celebrated buildings such as the Victoria and Albert Museum – which can still be seen today. By the 1890s they had become an essential feature in most Victorian terraced houses, offering both a classy and practical addition to the ordinary home.

Due to their incredibly durable nature, these Victorian tiled floors can be expected to last several hundred years, and as such many beautiful floors are being uncovered today to be restored to their former glory.

WENTWORTH CASTLE
William Anelay, the award winning heritage and conservation building experts from York, called on us to carry out the mammoth task of both repairing the existing Victorian Floor tiling as well as laying the new pattern from Original Style Tiles to the newly refurbished Wentworth Castle Conservatory.
The design was intricate and challenging with curves and undulating pathways to negotiate. The team worked tirelessly for 9 weeks laying approximately 42,000 tiny triangle tiles. The images speak for themselves and the Conservatory is now a popular attraction to guests across the country for celebratory functions such as weddings and special events.

Case Studies

ROCHDALE FLOOR
We were asked to carry out the floor tiling to the external porch area of a beautiful property in Rochdale using the (insert pattern name here) from Original Style Tiles in blue and grey. The floor itself required some repair and preparation due to settlement and cracking of the concrete base. Loose concrete was removed and repaired before an anti-crack membrane was fitted to ensure that no future issues could occur. The job had some challenges not least the inclement weather of Rochdale in Autumn and the border was delicately woven around the pillars and balustrades which framed the porch.
The result was a breath of fresh air to the property and colours complimented the white art deco style exterior. One happy customer!
